Tommy's well-meaning, perpetually distracted inventor father whose basement workshop produces an endless stream of toys that never quite work right.
Stu is a man who has never fully accepted that some ideas should stay ideas. He is a toy inventor — a real one, with patents and prototypes — and he believes in each new creation with the pure faith of someone who has not yet run the field test. His basement is a monument to this faith: half-finished gadgets, miniature motors, roll upon roll of wire. He loves Tommy without question. His parenting is distracted rather than absent — he is always nearby, often in the basement — and Tommy exploits this gap with affectionate precision. He is good-natured, easily flustered, and capable of extraordinary feats of improvised engineering when properly motivated. His brother Drew is more successful by conventional metrics; Stu is more interesting.
A lanky man in his mid-thirties with dark hair, often in a rumpled shirt and slacks; his hands are usually doing something — twisting a screwdriver, gesturing through an explanation, holding a mug of coffee.
