Lou is the babies' most reliable inadvertent accomplice. He means to watch them. He sits in the chair, the TV goes on, and within minutes he is asleep — his snoring the starting gun for whatever adventure Tommy has been planning. But Lou is not merely a plot device. He has lived a full life — he fought in the war, he raised kids, he has opinions about everything — and he tells stories about it constantly. The stories are long, sometimes contradictory, always digressive, and the adults stop listening immediately. The babies, who do not know they are supposed to be bored, sometimes actually hear things in Lou's stories that give them odd ideas. He loves his grandchildren with the uncomplicated warmth of someone who has made peace with the chaos.
