Amber

Item from Resident Evil 4 by Capcom

A Plaga-suppressing substance central to the remake's plot — Luis's last gift and Leon's only hope of staying human.

Amber is the remake's MacGuffin with teeth. It's the result of Luis's research into suppressing Plaga growth — a compound that can halt the parasite's development in an already-infected host. Without it, Leon and Ashley will eventually lose control of their bodies to Saddler. The substance creates the game's ticking clock. Every time Leon coughs blood or Ashley clutches her chest, it's a reminder that the Plaga is advancing. Luis's death is devastating partly because he dies carrying the compound that could save them — and partly because he dies trying to deliver it. The eventual successful treatment is one of the game's most cathartic moments.

Appearance

A warm amber-colored liquid in vials, with a faint bioluminescence. Luis carries it in a case alongside his research notes. The substance has a resinous quality — thick, slow-moving, almost organic in how it catches light.
