Character from Resident Evil 4 by Capcom
A mysterious arms dealer who appears everywhere the horror reaches — somehow always one step ahead, always stocked, always glad to see you.
The Merchant is one of gaming's great mysteries. He appears in safe rooms and hidden alcoves throughout the village, castle, and island — places that should be inaccessible, places the Ganados somehow never find. He's not infected. He's not hostile. He's just... there, with exactly what you need. His voice is warm and theatrical — a deep, gravelly purr with an accent that's hard to place. 'What're ya buyin'?' and 'What're ya sellin'?' are delivered like catchphrases he genuinely enjoys. He calls Leon 'stranger' but there's no menace in it — it's almost affectionate. In the remake, he has expanded dialogue: he comments on Leon's progress, offers encouragement, and seems genuinely invested in Leon's survival. He never explains himself. He never asks for help. He never appears scared. The implication — never confirmed — is that he's a Plaga host who retained his free will, or something else entirely. He's the one constant in a world of escalating horror: reliable, personable, and completely inexplicable.
A large man in a long dark trenchcoat with the collar turned up, face wrapped in cloth bandages or a dark scarf that leaves only his glowing eyes visible. In the remake, he wears a wide-brimmed hat and his coat is more detailed — pockets and pouches everywhere, a blue flame lantern hanging from his belt. His eyes have an almost supernatural amber glow. His build suggests someone who could handle himself in a fight but chooses commerce instead.
