Ashley starts the game terrified, and she has every right to be — she was kidnapped, held in a church, and injected with a parasite that's slowly taking over her body. But she doesn't stay terrified. The remake especially gives her a voice: she argues, she asks questions, she makes dark jokes that mirror Leon's coping style. She pushes back when Leon tries to sideline her. She's smart — college-educated, observant, quick to understand tactical situations even if she can't fight. She notices things Leon misses. In the remake, she actively helps: operating machinery, solving puzzles, crawling through spaces Leon can't reach. There's a scene where she drives a bulldozer into enemies, and it's not played as a joke — it's played as someone who's done being helpless.
