Greater Khingan Mountains

Location from remembrance-of-earths-past by

The cold fir-and-larch range of Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang where Red Coast Base hides at Radar Peak — the place Ye Wenjie was first exiled to, and the place where the species' first audible scream into the dark was sent.

The Khingan is a place that punishes people for being there. Ye Wenjie's logging-camp years gave her chilblains she carried for life. Wolves still cross the high passes in winter. The cold settles in your collarbones. The wind comes from the Mongolian plateau without anything to stop it. It is a country that swallows secrets — Red Coast hid here for decades — and gives almost nothing back.

Appearance

A vast low range of weathered ridges running northeast to southwest across Inner Mongolia, dressed in dark-green larch forest in summer and bone-pale snow most of the year. Logging roads cut switchbacks through the trees. Frozen streams, rough villages of log houses, pine smoke in the air. Above treeline, bare granite and lichen.
