The worldwide fifth-column conspiracy founded by Ye Wenjie and funded by Mike Evans — humanity's voluntary auxiliary to the Trisolaran invasion, split between Adventists who wanted extermination and Redemptionists who wanted reform.

The ETO is the trilogy's first villain and the model for every later betrayal. Founded after Mike Evans heard Ye Wenjie's story in the Khingan, funded by his Adventist oil money, populated by physicists, environmentalists, mathematicians, and disaffected officers, it operates a global recruitment funnel through the Three Body game. Its Adventists, led by Evans and Pan Han, want humanity destroyed for its sins; its Redemptionists, including Shen Yufei, want it reformed under Trisolaran rule. The internal feud kills more ETO members than the police do.

Appearance

The ETO has no headquarters and no insignia. Its members meet in basement bookstores, on Pacific freighters, in the Three Body VR. Its symbol — when forced — is a circular icon of a single planet under three suns, used quietly on the spines of certain editions of Cosmic Sociology pamphlets. Its uniform is whatever the local population is already wearing.
