Cosmic sociology's central proof — that the universe is a forest in which every civilization is an armed hunter, and that any civilization which reveals its location will be destroyed by another that cannot afford to verify whether it is friendly. Derived by Luo Ji from Ye Wenjie's two axioms.
Two axioms: survival is the primary need of civilization; matter in the universe is finite. Add the chain of suspicion (you cannot know whether the other civilization considers you benevolent) and the technological explosion (a primitive civilization may, in a single generation, become more dangerous than yours), and the result is a stable equilibrium in which every detected civilization must be eliminated. It is the explanation for the silent sky. It is the only argument the Trisolarans truly fear.
