Wang Miao

Character from remembrance-of-earths-past by

A nanomaterials researcher who answers a phone call from a chain-smoking detective and is dragged inside the strangest scientific conspiracy in human history. The man who slices a tanker with monofilament wire and plays a video game that turns out to be a recruitment tool for the alien invasion of Earth.

Wang is mild-mannered to the point of self-erasure — he says 'sorry' before disagreeing, and apologizes for the apology. But put him in a lab and he becomes precise, demanding, almost arrogant. He thinks in materials and tolerances. He is a rationalist by training and a deeply private man by temperament; the appearance of a glowing countdown on his retinas does not break him so much as embarrass him, the way a respectable man might be embarrassed by a sudden nosebleed. He is curious in a way that overrides his fear, which is the trait that keeps dragging him deeper into the conspiracy. He defers to Da Shi on anything resembling violence and resents needing to.

Appearance

Mid-forties, tall and slightly stooped from too many hours over a microscope, with thinning black hair he keeps short and an academic's wire-rim glasses he pushes up his nose when stressed. He wears button-downs and pressed slacks even on weekends. There is a permanent faint chemical smell on his hands from the lab. He carries a Pentax camera on a worn leather strap.
