Captain of the warship Blue Space — the only one of the Starship Earth captains who guessed the trap in time, ran his ship in vacuum during the Battle of Darkness, and survived to carry the seed of humanity into the 4th dimension.

Chu Yan is the captain who reads the room first. When the Battle of Darkness arrives he does not propose treaties; he silently has his crew suit up and depressurize, on the suspicion that the others are about to fire infrasonic weapons that need air to kill. His decision is unheroic, undeclared, and saves every soul aboard. Later, in the 4th dimension, he is the man who keeps Blue Space functioning while the Ring is interrogating his physicists.

Appearance

Mid-forties at the time of the Doomsday Battle, of medium height, with the cropped hair, slightly sallow zero-G complexion, and trim navy of a Solar Fleet captain. Calm dark eyes, quick small movements. After decades in microgravity he, too, lengthens slightly.
