Chang Weisi

PLA general, China's senior delegate to the Planetary Defense Council, the man who recruits Wang Miao into the Battle Command Center in the trilogy's first weeks and gives Shi Qiang the nickname Da Shi.

Chang Weisi is the rare general who actually reads the briefing papers. He is courteous to scientists, which surprises them; he is brutal in committee, which they do not see. He was the one who decided Wang Miao needed an actual bodyguard rather than a desk officer, and who decided that bodyguard had to be Da Shi, despite Da Shi's habit of insulting professors. He is loyal to the chain of command and to a slightly older idea of the country than the one currently in power, and he keeps the difference quiet.

Appearance

A trim career officer in his mid-fifties, in immaculate PLA general's dress uniform, gold braid at the cuff. Square face, close-cropped iron-gray hair, eyes the color of cold tea. Stands as if at attention even at dinner. The only ornament he wears off-duty is a small jade ring his wife gave him.
