Lykos

Location from Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Darrow's home — a Red mining colony deep beneath the surface of Mars. Where Eo sang, where she was hanged, and where a man decided to burn the world down.

Lykos is a coffin that its inhabitants call home. The colony exists to mine helium-3 from beneath Mars's surface, and every aspect of life is shaped by that purpose. Reds are born in the colony, trained to work the drills by their mid-teens, married off to produce the next generation of miners, and buried in the stone when the dust finally takes their lungs. They believe they are pioneers — that their sacrifice is terraforming Mars for future generations. The lie is total. The surface has been habitable for centuries. Darrow lived his entire early life here: married Eo, worked the mines alongside his brother Kieran, competed in the Laurel for extra rations. When Eo was hanged by the ArchGovernor for singing a forbidden song, Darrow followed her to the gallows — and was intercepted by the Sons of Ares, who showed him the truth. Everything that Darrow becomes, every war he wages and every throne he topples, begins in the tunnels of Lykos with a girl who refused to live on her knees.

Appearance

A cramped subterranean township carved from Martian rock, lit by headlamps and bioluminescent fungi. Low ceilings, narrow tunnels, communal mess halls, and the ever-present rumble of drilling equipment. The air tastes of dust and recycled oxygen. Everything is functional, worn, and small.
