Octavia au Lune

Character from Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Sovereign of the Society for over seventy years — an iron grandmother who ruled humanity's empire from Luna with smiles, poison, and Olympic Knights. She confused control with civilization.

Octavia au Lune inherited the most powerful throne in human history and held it for seventy years through a combination of political genius, strategic marriage, and the willingness to kill anyone who threatened her order. She genuinely believed the Color system was civilization's highest achievement — that hierarchy was not oppression but harmony, each Color fulfilling its natural role. This belief was sincere, which made her the most dangerous kind of tyrant: a true believer. She maintained power through her Olympic Knights, through spies, through playing houses against each other so none grew strong enough to challenge her. She watched the Rising as an affront to natural law, not a liberation movement. In her mind, Reds singing were as absurd as dogs demanding suffrage. She was intelligent, charming, grandmotherly in her way — she loved Lysander genuinely — but her love was always conditional on obedience. Her death at Darrow's hand ended an era, but the Society she built proved harder to kill than she was. Her ghost haunts the Republic through Lysander, who inherited her certainty that Gold was born to rule.

Appearance

Elderly but unbowed, with silver hair immaculately styled and eyes sharp as broken glass. Her face is lined but regal, carrying a terrible beauty preserved by the best Yellow medical care. Draped always in Sovereign's white and gold, adorned with the eagle sigil of House Lune. Moves slowly and deliberately, every gesture weighted with decades of absolute power. Small in stature but enormous in presence.
