The Stilts

Location from Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Mare's home — a Red settlement of houses built on stilts above the river, where families survive conscription, poverty, and the knowledge that the gleaming city across the water will never be theirs.

The Stilts are where the Barrow family lives — Mare, Shade, Gisa, their parents, and their older brothers who were all conscripted. It is a community built on the water because that's what was left after Silvers took the good land. The houses flood. The work is dangerous. At eighteen, your children leave for the war and most of them don't come back. The Stilts are not picturesque poverty. They're the real kind — the kind where a broken hand ends a career, where conscription is a death sentence, and where the view of Silver luxury across the river is a daily reminder of exactly how little your blood is worth. Mare's lightning first sparked here. Everything that followed — the revolution, the war, the democratic Nortan States — traces back to a Red girl from a stilt house who shouldn't have had power and did.

Appearance

A poverty-stricken Red village of wooden houses built on stilts above a brown river — the kind of settlement that exists because Silvers needed workers nearby. The houses are patched and weathered. The river is slow and muddy. Across it, the Silver city glitters, close enough to see and impossible to reach.
