Shade was the Barrow sibling who understood Mare best. He never bullied her like the older brothers. He was patient, caring, intelligent, and — it turned out — a Newblood teleporter who could jump himself and others across distances by touch. He joined the Scarlet Guard under the codename 'Shadow' and fell in love with Diana Farley. He died at Corros Prison, killed by Ptolemus Samos's metal needle while trying to teleport Mare to safety. The needle was aimed at Mare. Shade stepped in. His daughter Clara was born after his death. Mare named her son after him. Cal's reformed Nortan States were built, in part, on the sacrifice of people like Shade — ordinary extraordinary people who died so the system that killed them could be destroyed.

Appearance

Honey-colored amber eyes, brown hair, and golden skin. Tall and lean — the 'handsome one' of the Barrow siblings. He carried himself with patient warmth that made everyone trust him instinctively.
