Elara Merandus

Character from Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

The whisper queen who broke her own son's mind to build a king — a woman whose ambition was absolute and whose weapon was inside your head.

Elara Merandus is the Red Queen series' true villain — not because she's the most powerful (she isn't), but because her cruelty is methodical, personal, and invisible. She is a whisper — a mind-reader and mind-controller — and she uses her ability like a surgeon uses a scalpel: to cut away the parts of people that inconvenience her. She killed Cal's mother Coriane through relentless psychological torment — driving her to suicide so Elara could marry King Tiberias VI and position Maven for the throne. She manipulated Maven from infancy, removing his love for Cal, his love for his father, his ability to dream, reshaping his mind until he became the perfect instrument of her ambition. She 'loved' Maven in a twisted way — the love of a craftsman for their finest work. Her ambition was not personal power — it was dynastic. She wanted a Merandus on the throne, controlling Norta through whispered suggestion. She orchestrated Maven's betrayal of Mare and the Scarlet Guard, his seizure of the throne, and the propaganda campaign that followed. Mare killed her with lightning at Corros Prison. Even dead, Elara's whispered manipulations lingered in Maven's mind like echoes in an empty room.

Appearance

Pale skin, straight ash-blonde hair, and icy blue eyes with long dark lashes. A pointed smile that never reached her eyes. She dressed in navy and white and carried herself with the precision of someone who has been 'pruned to court perfection since she was a child.' When angry, she resembled a predatory cat.
