Dr. Robert Redell

Character from Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

A disgraced engineer pulled from prison because his blackpanel technology was the only way to breed enough Astrophage to fuel a starship — proving that sometimes the world needs its outcasts.

Redell is brilliant and disgraced — the exact combination Stratt specializes in exploiting. His blackpanel technology — a glass and anodized metal solar energy conductor — turned out to be the key to mass-breeding Astrophage for the spin drives. Without blackpanels, the Hail Mary never gets enough fuel. Without Redell, there are no blackpanels. Stratt pulled him from prison because she needed his brain and didn't care about his record. Redell accepted because the alternative was a cell and the extinction of his species. His redemption arc is quiet and practical: he doesn't save the world through heroism, he saves it through engineering competence applied at the exact moment it was needed.

Appearance

Carries the worn look of a man who has been through the system — prison left marks that aren't all physical. His hands are precise, an engineer's hands, regardless of what the rest of him has been through.
