Dr. Lokken

Character from Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

The Norwegian scientist who realized you can't do microbiology in zero gravity — and redesigned the entire spacecraft around that problem.

Lokken's contribution to Project Hail Mary is deceptively simple: she pointed out that every piece of lab equipment on the ship was designed for use under gravity. Microscopes, centrifuges, sample containers — none of it works when things float. Rather than redesign every instrument, she proposed redesigning the ship itself: a two-part centrifuge that spins to create artificial gravity. This is the kind of insight that seems obvious in hindsight but requires someone willing to challenge the existing plan at a fundamental level. Lokken had the credibility and the nerve to tell a room full of engineers that their ship design was wrong, and the clarity to propose the alternative that actually worked.
