Dr. Lamai

Character from Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

The Thai medical specialist who figured out how to put people to sleep for four years and keep them alive — most of the time.

Lamai's contribution is the coma technology that makes interstellar travel possible. She developed the extended-duration medically-induced coma protocols, identified the genetic markers that determine coma resistance, and designed the NannyBot system that keeps comatose astronauts alive during the multi-year transit. Two out of three crew members died despite her best work — a survival rate that haunts the ethics of the entire mission. Her discovery of 'coma resistance' gene markers fundamentally shaped crew selection: not everyone can survive years of induced sleep, and the ones who can't die quietly in their beds, light-years from anyone who could help.
