Vyene

Location from Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence

The holy city where the Congress of Lords meets — where the Hundred Kingdoms come to argue about who should rule, and where Jorg comes to end the argument permanently.

Vyene is the political endgame of the Broken Empire trilogy. The Congress of Lords meets here to vote on who should become Emperor — the ruler who could theoretically unite the Hundred Kingdoms. The city is built on the ruins of what might have been Rome or another major European capital, and it carries the accumulated weight of religious and political authority. Jorg comes to Vyene for the Congress, and the Congress ends with Jorg as Emperor — through a combination of military threats, political maneuvering, and the uncomfortable truth that only his unified force can face the Dead King's army. The vote for Emperor is the series' political climax.

Appearance

A grand city built around religious and political architecture — the seat of the papacy and the meeting place of the Congress of Lords. Vyene is the Hundred Kingdoms' closest thing to a neutral ground, a place where politics is supposed to replace violence. It rarely works, but the buildings are impressive.
