Character from Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence
Jorg's childhood tutor and the Brothers' reluctant chaplain — a man of the cloth dragged through hell by a prince who refuses to stop walking.
Father Coddin served as Jorg's tutor at Tall Castle and later accompanied the Brothers as their chaplain — not by choice, exactly, but because Jorg collected him the way Jorg collects useful people. He provides Jorg with education, moral counterpoint, and the specific kind of suffering that comes from watching a student you taught letters use those letters to write death warrants. He represents the remnant of Jorg's civilization — the part that tried to give the boy something besides violence. Whether it worked is the trilogy's open question.
An aging priest with the worn look of a man whose faith has been tested by proximity to Jorg Ancrath. He carries a Bible and the expression of someone who prays a great deal and suspects it isn't working.
