Speer

Location from The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

The Speerly homeland — a destroyed island whose people carried the Phoenix in their blood, wiped out by Mugen because a nation of potential fire gods was too dangerous to leave alive.

Speer was the homeland of the Speerly people — a distinct ethnic group with dark skin, golden eyes, and an innate shamanic connection to the Phoenix. The Speerly were powerful, culturally distinct from mainland Nikara, and their Phoenix-channeling ability made them one of the most formidable military assets in the world. The Federation of Mugen destroyed Speer completely, killing or scattering the entire population. This wasn't hatred — it was strategy. The Speerly's Phoenix connection made them an existential threat to any invading force, so Mugen eliminated them first. The Nikara Empire let it happen because Speerly shamanic power was also a threat to them. Altan was the last known Speerly — until Rin discovered her own heritage. Speer's destruction is the foundational atrocity of the trilogy: the genocide that made Rin possible, the loss that drives Altan to self-destruction, and the precedent that Rin mirrors when she destroys Mugen in return.

Appearance

Exists only in memory and historical accounts — a tropical island that was home to the Speerly people before the Federation of Mugen destroyed it completely. What survivors describe suggests a warm, vibrant place utterly unlike the cold northern cities where the last Speerly ended up. Nothing remains but ash and ruins.
