The Keju Exam

Item from The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

The imperial examination — the one meritocratic gateway in a deeply unequal Empire, the test that took a southern orphan and put her in the room where the world's most dangerous people are made.

The Keju is the Nikara Empire's examination system — the meritocratic gateway to Sinegard Military Academy and, through it, to military and political power. In theory, it's the great equalizer: anyone who passes can attend the academy, regardless of birth. In practice, wealthy families hire tutors, and southern students face systemic disadvantages. Rin's Keju story is the trilogy's opening hook: a southern orphan studying by candlelight, burning herself to stay awake, passing the exam through sheer desperation and talent. The Keju represents the promise of meritocracy in a system that doesn't actually believe in it. Rin passes; the system then spends three books trying to decide what to do with what it let in.

Appearance

A standardized written examination administered across the Nikara Empire — the equivalent of an imperial civil service/military academy entrance exam. Testing centers set up in provincial capitals, proctored by imperial officials. The exam covers military strategy, history, literature, mathematics, and martial arts. For southern students, it's a lifeline; for northern students, it's a formality.
