Chaghan

Character from The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

The Cike's seer — an albino shaman who walks between the spirit world and the living one, sees futures no one wants to hear, and carries his gift like a chronic illness that never quite kills him.

Chaghan sees things. Not metaphorically — he perceives the spirit world layered over the physical one, reads futures in patterns most people can't detect, and navigates the border between worlds with a familiarity that has made him something less than fully human. He's irritable, sharp-tongued, and contemptuous of people who don't understand what he's telling them, which is everyone. His bond with his twin sister Qara is the anchor that keeps him tethered to the physical world. Without her, he'd drift into the Pantheon permanently. Their shamanic abilities are complementary — he sees the spirit world, she controls the animal world — and they function as a single unit. His protectiveness of Qara is the one soft spot in an otherwise abrasive personality. As a seer, Chaghan is invaluable and unpleasant in equal measure. He tells the Cike what's coming. They don't like what he tells them. He doesn't care whether they like it.

Appearance

Strikingly pale — albino with white hair, white skin, and unsettling light eyes that seem to look through people rather than at them. Thin and fragile-looking, as though the spirit world has been draining his physical substance for years. Wears dark clothing that emphasizes his pallor. His physical frailty contrasts sharply with the Cike's other combatants — he is visibly not a fighter, which makes his presence on a special ops team conspicuous.
