Unova's badges function as the League's tiered entry requirement — all eight must be presented at the Vertress registration desk to enter the tournament. They're also tokens of earned relationship: each badge carries a small digital signature from the Leader who awarded it, readable on a Pokédex, which is how Alder verifies attendance. Ash earns all eight — Trio (Chili), Basic (Lenora), Insect (Burgh), Bolt (Elesa), Quake (Clay), Jet (Skyla), Freeze (Brycen), Legend (Drayden).
