Virgil is the Unova League Champion — he wins the tournament bracket that Ash loses in the Top 8 and Cameron loses in the Top 4. His team is the Eeveelution full set: Eevee, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon. He swaps them mid-match by type, like a sommelier pairing wines, and the fandom read him as the most boring possible champion precisely because the lineup is clean. Out of battle Virgil is something much more interesting — a professional first responder who rescues Pokémon trapped in disaster zones. He meets Ash when a herd of Deerling gets caught in a rockslide; he performs triage before he even offers his name. His battle style and his civilian job are the same thing: methodical, gentle, type-appropriate. He is the only recurring rival in the anime to ever hold a current regional League title.
