Trip

Character from pokemon-unova by

A new-trainer rival designed as an inverted mirror of Ash — photographs his Pokémon instead of loving them, treats 'Kanto' like a dirty word, and still has a lot to learn.

Trip is the first trainer Ash battles in Unova and the only one who matters on arrival, because Trip's freshly caught low-level Snivy knocks out Pikachu in public, on episode one, while Ash is watching. The embarrassment writes the rivalry. Trip uses his camera obsessively — he photographs his Pokémon from distances that keep them at arm's length, collects them like fieldwork specimens, and dismisses Kanto trainers as provincial. 'This isn't Kanto' becomes his catchphrase and an unintentional thesis on the soft reset. Underneath the posture he's reading Alder's biography in his tent. He wants to be Champion. He arrives at every city having already done the homework Ash forgot to do. By the Unova League he's made it to Top 16 and lost — the same loss Ash is feeling his way toward understanding. His goodbye scene with Ash is grudging warmth, which is as much as Trip will ever give anyone.

Appearance

A sandy-haired teenage boy in a slate-grey jacket, black shorts, tall hiking boots, a digital camera slung around his neck. Cold blue-green eyes. Posture like someone who has already decided to be unimpressed. Rarely smiles without a sneer under it. Moves economically.
