Stephan is the tournament rival — he exists to show up in bracket events (Club Battle, Clubsplosion, Junior Cup) and either push Ash to improve or beat him outright. Wins the Club Battle final against Iris. Wins Clubsplosion with his Sawk. Goes out in the early rounds of the Junior Cup when the stakes are Alder-observed. His Pokémon are unsubtle bruisers: Sawk, Zebstrika, Liepard. His strategy is hitting hard and taking the counter-hit on the chin. The running joke — everyone mangles his name. 'Stephen', 'Stefan', 'Steven'. He corrects every single one of them without flagging. It's the nicest tic in the show.
