Snivy joined Ash's team by losing to him — she was a con artist Snivy, using Attract to rob male trainers in a patch of Route forest, until Ash caught her with a no-nonsense vine duel. She accepted the capture with a bow, like a defeated samurai. Since then she has behaved as if she is chaperoning Ash, not following him. Eye rolls. Tail taps on foreheads. Leans against a tree during Oshawott's melodramatic speeches with the patience of a saint considering retirement. In battle she's the most technically skilled Pokémon Ash catches in Unova — Leaf Storm, Attract, Leaf Blade, Vine Whip, all applied with cold precision. She refuses to evolve, same as Oshawott and Pikachu. She's a Boss, not a follower, and the Unova team is a matriarchy she politely declines to formalize.
