Oshawott was Professor Juniper's starter before he escaped her lab to ride with Ash — he picked his trainer, not the other way around. He's the comic engine of the early party: falls in love at first sight with every female Water-type they meet, gets humiliated, weeps operatically, picks himself up for the next battle. But he's the starter with the clearest fighting style — Razor Shell is crisp, Hydro Pump hits hard when he concentrates, and he trains himself when the rest of the team is asleep. He has a running insecurity about his scalchop. He drops it. He loses it. He goes on a solo quest in Driftveil to find a replacement when the original cracks. He is visibly relieved when he doesn't have to evolve — the show plays his refusal to become Dewott as a character beat, not a joke. Works well with Pikachu after an early period of jealousy. Protective of Axew in a way he'd never admit out loud.
