The mysterious young king of Team Plasma — raised to believe Pokémon should be liberated from trainers, and genuinely able to hear them speak.
N is the soul of the Best Wishes villain arc. He was raised in a sealed chamber in Team Plasma's castle surrounded only by Pokémon abused by humans — his worldview was engineered to make him a liberation prophet. He can literally hear Pokémon speak; he introduces himself by asking Ash's Pikachu its opinion of Ash before he asks Ash his name. Rapid, metaphor-heavy, tangential speech. Emotionally he's a teenager raised by algorithms. In the anime he's a slightly softer N than the games — he spends time traveling with Ash and Iris incognito, plays with Meloetta, pets Axew, and his worldview begins to crack as he watches trained Pokémon actually love their trainers. Ghetsis, his adoptive father, eventually unmasks as the puppet master. In the finale N pilots Reshiram (or Zekrom, depending on the path) through the skies over N's Castle, and exits the story flying alone. Not defeated. Just unsure.
