Team Rocket's talking Meowth — the only Pokémon in the franchise who reads the memo before the mission, and in Unova he temporarily quits Team Rocket to ride with the good guys.
Meowth is the emotional core of Team Rocket and a running reminder that the villains are a working-class trio doing contract work for a monstrous boss. He learned to speak human to impress a Meowzie who rejected him; he never got over it. His Best Wishes arc is the one where he briefly defects — he fakes betrayal, infiltrates Ash's group, gets genuinely attached, and then has to choose between a kid who trusts him and his two lifelong partners. He picks his partners, but the moment matters. In combat he punches with Fury Swipes like it's 1999 and he's never heard of power creep. His real value is tactical: he translates for Pokémon who won't trust trainers, he speaks to wild Woobat and Sawsbuck and Meloetta, he reads the emotional weather of any room he's in. He calls Jessie 'Jess' and James 'Jim' and the boss 'the Boss' with the exact same awe each time.
