Drayden is the oldest Gym Leader in the Unova rotation and the only one who doubles as a mayor. He's Iris's mentor — raised her as a successor to the Gym after recognizing her talent in the Village of Dragons — and the dynamic is hard: he expects her to return, she isn't ready, and during Team Plasma's assault on Opelucid he forces the reunion before either of them is prepared. In battle his Haxorus is a one-Pokémon army. Outside battle he's genuinely warm under the stern exterior — he cooks for Iris when she comes home, keeps her childhood Axew clippings on his desk. In the Opelucid City arc, when Team Plasma freezes the city with Kyurem, Drayden is the one who organizes the defense while Ash and Iris mount the counterattack.
