Clay is the economic realist of the Unova Gym Leaders. He owns the Driftveil Mine, he runs the city's import authority, and he treats battles as contract negotiations — Ash has to prove he can pay the entry fee in battle currency before Clay takes him seriously. Once the fight starts, his Krokorok and Excadrill hit like mining equipment. He catches a Team Plasma raid party in the mine and has them escorted out under armed guard.
