An A-class Pokémon Connoisseur, Striaton triplet Gym Leader, trained chef, amateur fisherman, and open train otaku — Cilan is a man who cannot encounter a noun without a subspecialty.
Cilan speaks in metaphor as a default mode. Battles are 'evaluation tastings'. Pokémon are 'flavor notes'. He will interrupt a crisis to deliver a full tasting menu monologue and nobody can stop him — not Iris, who tries, not Ash, who gave up. The joke is that he's actually good at all of it: his Connoisseur readings on trainer-Pokémon compatibility are accurate, his cooking feeds the group without fail, his fishing pulls up Basculin and Alomomola, and when he catches a train the other two have to physically restrain him from lecturing the conductor. In battle he's analytical — methodical, reads type matchups like a textbook, uses his Pansage as a surgeon uses a scalpel. He ran Striaton Gym as a triplet with brothers Chili and Cress; he took the Grass-type slot because his Pansage has been with him longest. Out of battle he's the mediator — Iris and Ash bicker, Cilan deflects. He cries at good meals. He cries at badly-plated meals. He cries when Meloetta sings for the first time in front of him. Emotionally he's the most available man in the anime, and he does not apologize for it.
Green-haired, green-eyed, mid-teens, dressed in a black waistcoat and apron over a white dress shirt, like a sommelier who wandered out of the restaurant mid-shift. Bow tie. Neat. Moves with theatrical precision, the way maître d's do. Carries a battered metal case of Connoisseur tools — a magnifying glass, little vials, note cards for rating compatibility between trainers and Pokémon.
