Ash's partner and the most battle-tested Pikachu in the anime — by Sinnoh, strong enough to KO a Darkrai in the Pokémon League and refuse to evolve out of pride and loyalty.

Pikachu has been fighting at the level of an evolved Pokémon since Kanto, and in Sinnoh it shows. It KO's Paul's Drapion at the League. It survives a direct Dark Void and retaliates through the sleep to put Tobias's Darkrai down. It respects Ash utterly and tolerates Dawn's Buneary's obvious crush with a slightly panicked politeness — Buneary leaps into its arms at every opportunity, and Pikachu has learned to smile thinly and look at something in the middle distance. It will still refuse the Thunder Stone. When Ash asks, at the start of every new region, whether it wants to evolve, Pikachu shakes its head and crackles its cheeks. The bond is older than the question.

Appearance

A yellow Electric-type mouse, roughly two feet tall, with a lightning-bolt tail, brown stripes across the back, and red circles on each cheek where electricity pools. Black-tipped ears. Always on Ash's shoulder when travelling, always in the front Poké Ball slot during battles. Sparks when annoyed. Eats ketchup directly from packets.
