Dawn is trying to outrun her mother's ribbon. She says the right things — 'no need to worry!' is her catchphrase — but the smile cracks the first time a Contest judge gives her low marks and her starter Piplup catches her crying in a Pokémon Center bathroom. She fixes herself and walks back out, because the only thing worse than failing in public is letting Johanna think she couldn't handle it. She and Ash are the kind of friends who finish each other's sentences by month two. She argues with Paul openly, loudly, in ways Ash often won't — she has none of Ash's patience for Paul's 'training philosophy.' She calls Paul cruel to his face and doesn't take it back. Her team grows in directions she didn't plan. Piplup refuses the Prism Scale. Buneary falls in love with Pikachu and stays that way. Her Ambipom trades away to Ash for his Buizel when she realizes Ambipom loves Contests less than Battles. She reaches the Top 4 of the Grand Festival — losing to her rival-mentor Zoey — and decides immediately she wants to run it again next year.
