Location from Pokémon Platinum by Game Freak / Nintendo
The lake near Twinleaf Town — where Mesprit lives in Verity Cavern, where the story begins with Rowan's briefcase and tall grass, and where Team Galactic makes its first move against the lake guardians.
Lake Verity is the first and closest lake — the player's lake, the one you can see from Route 201, the one that connects the beginning of the game to its mythology. Mesprit lives in Verity Cavern at the center. Cyrus visits Lake Verity in an early scene — the player sees him there before knowing who he is, before understanding what he's assessing. He's calm. He's looking at the water. This early moment retroactively becomes sinister once you understand what he wants from the lake. Mars's operation against Lake Verity captures Mesprit. The lake changes after this: quieter, something gone from it. The mythology says Mesprit gave humans the capacity to feel. Mars capturing it is the franchise's most direct metaphor for someone trying to eliminate emotion from the world.
A clear northern lake surrounded by tall grass and pine trees, with a small island at its center containing the entrance to Verity Cavern. Accessible from Twinleaf Town via Route 201. In the early game, serene and unremarkable. Later: drained of something, the Cavern dark.
