Oreburgh City's Gym Leader and mine safety supervisor — a young Rock-type specialist who runs the mine responsibly, loses to the player with genuine humility, and happens to be Byron's son.
Roark is the first gym leader, which means he loses first, which means he is the first person to demonstrate something the game keeps teaching: losing is survivable. He's embarrassed after his Cranidos falls to a trainer without a single badge. He admits it. He trains harder. He doesn't make excuses about the type disadvantage. He runs the Oreburgh Mine as the safety supervisor — a real job with real responsibility, not a courtesy title. The miners respect him for it. He knows the underground better than almost anyone, which led Riley to suggest him for the gym leader position when he himself declined. His relationship with his father Byron is complicated in the way all father-son dynamics in Sinnoh are slightly complicated: Byron isn't surprised Roark lost to the protagonist. This is either encouragement or indifference, and Roark seems to have decided it's encouragement.
A young man with short cordovan-brown hair and matching dark red eyes, wearing the grey hard hat and vest of an Oreburgh miner even when he's in the gym. Has the stocky build of someone who spends real time underground. His hands are calloused.
