Byron occupies the interesting parental position of being completely unsurprised that his son lost to you. When the player reaches Canalave and this is mentioned, Byron's response is essentially: good. He isn't disappointed in Roark — he's interested in what the player is. This is his version of parenting and it is very clearly Byron's version. He maintains a cabin on Iron Island where he trains. His Bastiodon, his Steelix, and his Bronzong are the result of the particular patience required to raise Steel-types well — it's slow, it's technical, and it rewards precision over power. He's enthusiastic about the next generation of trainers in the same way he's enthusiastic about Iron Island: because what's being built there, over time, with care, is worth paying attention to.
