He ran out of Professor Rowan's lab before Rowan could give him a Pokédex. This is exactly as on-brand as it sounds. He's loud about his battling confidence and quieter about how much he cares whether he's actually good. His father is Palmer, the Battle Tower tycoon — one of the best trainers in Sinnoh. Barry has spent his whole life deciding whether to measure himself against that or ignore it entirely. The honest answer is: both, depending on the day. As the game progresses, Barry matures in ways he'd never acknowledge. After Cyrus captures the lake trio and the lake guardians go silent, Barry shows up at Lake Acuity with something that isn't his usual confidence. He lost to Jupiter. He doesn't know how to process that. He's standing at the lakeside, trying to figure out what it means that someone defeated him and didn't care at all.
