The first proper city north of Pallet Town — home of Kanto's only 24-hour Pokémon Center open to first-day trainers, and the city whose gym Ash saves for last.
Viridian City is the first breath every trainer takes after the chaos of Route 1. The Pokémon Center here is the one where Ash burst through the doors with a shredded Pikachu in his arms at midnight, where Nurse Joy scolded him for transporting a Pokémon uncovered in a storm, and where he spent his first night as a trainer watching thunder outside the window. The gym is the final Kanto challenge — Giovanni's — and only opens late in a trainer's journey. Team Rocket operates out of a building somewhere in the outskirts.
A modest urban grid of red-and-white roofs, a Pokémon Center with the glowing Poké Ball sign above its glass doors, a Pokémon Mart in its blue-and-orange awning, a fountain in the central square. The gym is at the north end — a squat, menacing building with a red-and-black paint job and tinted windows.
