Mt. Moon is a liminal space: trainers enter tired from Viridian Forest and emerge at Cerulean City. Inside the caves, Zubat swarm at the slightest sound and Paras scuttle over crusted moss. The true secret of the mountain is the Moon Stone — a sacred meteoritic rock around which the local Clefairy gather nightly to dance, and which Team Rocket attempts to steal on Ash's first passage. The dance is interrupted, Team Rocket is blasted off, and the Clefairy evolve en masse into Clefable in the moonlight — a sight few trainers ever witness.
A jagged mountain rising between the two cities, honeycombed with cave entrances at its base and flanks. Inside, the caves are dim and damp with stalactites dripping into shallow pools, Zubat swarms clinging to the ceilings, patches of bioluminescent moss. At the central chamber's heart sits the Moon Stone — a massive meteoritic rock surrounded by a Clefairy ritual circle.
