Professor Oak

Character from pokemon-kanto by

The leading Pokémon researcher of Kanto, based in Pallet Town, who invented the Pokédex and gives every new trainer their first Pokémon and their first lecture.

Professor Oak is the calm center of Kanto trainer culture. He runs the Pokémon laboratory in Pallet Town that houses every Pokémon Ash catches beyond his travel party — the Tauros herd, the Muk, thirty Taurii from the Safari Zone — and fields hundreds of phone calls a week from new trainers who've gotten stuck on a basic question. He is Ash's mentor in the hands-off way good mentors are: he provides the Pokédex, the occasional phone tip, and the reminder that knowledge matters more than ego. He writes Pokémon poetry badly, performs it enthusiastically at every Pokémon League opening ceremony, and is quietly mourned by every one of his grandson Gary's cheerleaders. His relationship with Delia Ketchum is warm in a way the show never quite confirms. He remembers every Pokémon every trainer has ever shown him and recognizes species on sight that the Pokédex still has to think about.

Appearance

A man in his sixties, silver-white hair neatly parted, warm brown eyes, laugh lines deepening whenever he speaks to a child. Wears a white lab coat over a red polo shirt, brown slacks, sensible shoes. Speaks in a confident, grandfatherly baritone and gestures with both hands when describing a Pokémon.
