Luana runs the Kumquat Island resort hotel and the Orange Crew's fourth gym out of the hotel's arena. She battles exclusively in double-battle format — two Pokémon at once — with a Marowak and Alakazam who coordinate attacks in a way few Kanto trainers have encountered. She also, on first sight of Ash, bursts into tears and grabs him — convinced he is her son Travis who has been away for a decade. Her aide has to gently explain the misunderstanding. Ash plays along sweetly for the afternoon, they battle in the evening, Ash wins the Jade Star Badge, and Luana hugs him goodbye still slightly convinced.
