Gary Oak

Character from pokemon-kanto by

Professor Oak's grandson and Ash's lifelong rival — a hotshot new trainer from Pallet Town who travels with a literal cheerleading squad in a red convertible and whose Pokédex number is always higher than Ash's.

Gary is the version of Ash's journey in which the trainer actually did his homework. He received Squirtle from Professor Oak on time, knows every Pokémon on his Pokédex on sight, and addresses his grandfather as 'Gramps' in public to make it clear he comes from the best trainer pedigree in Kanto. He speaks in cocky taunts — 'Ashy-boy,' 'loser,' 'smell ya later' — and his cheerleaders underscore every line with choreographed pom-pom routines. He is, sincerely, annoying. Beneath the arrogance is a kid with something to prove — to his late-famous grandfather, to the town that raised him, and to the boy next door who somehow keeps ending up in the same places he does. Gary reaches the Indigo League ahead of Ash, then loses in an early round to an older trainer. It breaks something in him. By the time they meet again after the Orange Islands he is quieter, less cheerleader-reliant, and starting to take battles personally instead of performatively.

Appearance

Same age as Ash, brown spiky hair with a touch of swagger built in, dark eyes, purple shirt with a large oval pendant around his neck, baggy greenish pants. Pretty-boy features he is extremely aware of. Travels with four identically-dressed cheerleaders and drives (somehow, at age ten) a red convertible sports car.

Also known as: Shigeru, Gary Oak the Great, Gramps's grandson, Ashy-boy's rival
