Drake is the Orange League's final test. Unlike the Indigo League's massive knockout bracket, the Orange League championship is a one-on-one, six-versus-six match with the sitting champion on Pummelo Island. Drake's team is balanced across every environment: Ditto, Onix, Gengar, Venusaur, Electabuzz, Dragonite. He fights slowly and deliberately, adapting his Pokémon to whatever Ash throws at him, and his Dragonite has never been beaten. Ash's Charizard defeats the Dragonite in the final match in what fans generally consider the purest payoff the anime has delivered to that point. Drake hands over the Orange League trophy and the right to have Ash's portrait in the Orange League Hall of Fame. He is gracious in defeat, recommends Ash keep training, and hints that tougher leagues await in other regions.
