Danny lives at the summit of Navel Island's mountain, and the gym challenge begins at the base: climb the mountain, freeze a pool of water with ice Pokémon, build a sled from the mountain's bamboo and the trainer's own Pokémon's moves, then race down the mountain course. Only after all that does the battle itself begin — a three-on-three on a beach at the mountain's base. He is earnest, competent, and irritatingly good at everything, which means Misty immediately develops a crush that Ash cheerfully weaponizes. His Pokémon are a Nidoqueen, a Machoke, and a Scyther used for construction as much as battle. He awards the Sea Ruby Badge with a handshake and a shirtless wave goodbye.
