The Gym Leader of Cinnabar Island — a riddle-loving Fire-type specialist who hides his gym inside a volcano beneath a tourist hot-spring inn.
Blaine refuses to hand out his badge without first being beaten at a riddle. He sets one for every trainer who finds his gym entrance (hidden behind a rotating statue in the public hot-spring inn). His Pokémon are all Fire-types — Ninetales, Rhydon (which he has cross-trained), and the terrifying Magmar that battles Ash on a raft over an active volcano vent. He is jolly, theatrical, and surprisingly kind to trainers who lose: he tells them the answer to the riddle and invites them to think about it for the rematch. He awards the Volcano Badge to Ash only after Charmander — freshly evolved into Charmeleon for the fight — endures Magmar's heat long enough to force a knockout. Blaine tips his hat, hands over the badge, and recommends the inn's onsen to recover.
