Sawyer is the rival Ash shaped most obviously. He started as a middling battler obsessed with note-taking; then he met Ash, tried to replicate Ash's improvisational combos, and discovered that raw speed of adaptation matters more than pre-planned moves. His Treecko evolves into Sceptile and eventually Mega Sceptile. He pushes Ash all the way to the Kalos League semifinal, where they have a brutal six-on-six that Sceptile-Mega narrowly loses to Ash-Greninja. Sawyer has a huge, unembarrassed admiration for Ash and is the only rival who refers to him by title.
